Mass Volunteer Role Descriptions

The celebration of the Mass depends upon many people prayerfully lending a hand, both during the liturgy and behind the scenes. Whether assisting with the offertory collection, proclaiming the Word of God, or preparing the church for Mass, there are many ways to serve our parish while participating in the celebration of the Mass.

Offertory Collection Volunteer
What: Help serve our parish during Mass by assisting with the offertory collection. Volunteers pass the collection baskets through the congregation and help ensure that the collection proceeds smoothly and reverently. It’s a simple but important way to lend a hand in the celebration of the Mass you are already attending.
Time Commitment: Just a few minutes during Mass.
When: During the offertory at the Mass you are scheduled to serve.

Lector
What: Proclaim the Word of God at Mass! Lectors serve our parish by prayerfully preparing and proclaiming the Scripture readings so that God’s Word may be clearly and reverently heard by the entire congregation. If you are comfortable speaking in front of others and would like to serve the liturgy in this special way, consider joining our team of lectors. Training will be provided, so no previous experience is necessary.
Time Commitment: In addition to serving at Mass, some time during the week to prayerfully read and prepare the day’s Scripture readings.
When: At the Mass you are scheduled to serve.

Sacristan
What: Help prepare our church for the celebration of Mass and make sure that everything is ready for the liturgy. Sacristans work behind the scenes before Mass, attending to the practical details that help the liturgy proceed smoothly and reverently. After Mass, they help return things to their proper places and prepare the church for what comes next. Training will be provided, so you don’t need to arrive knowing all the ins and outs of the sacristy!
Time Commitment: Approximately 30 minutes before Mass, plus a short time afterward.
When: Before and after the Mass you are scheduled to serve.
